Besides these 13 varieties, three exclusive varieties of Indian specialty coffees have made their mark in international markets.
As the story goes, batches of coffee beans that were being sent from India to Europe, centuries ago, unintentionally acquired some special characteristics en route due to the long voyage and monsoon winds. The beans themselves began to swell in size and acquire a strong musty and mellow, yet aggressive taste with reduced acidity that the Europeans began to love. In fact, they began to complain when transport conditions improved and impacted this process of natural aging!
Subsequently, coffee growers decided to replicate the process by storing coffee beans in open-sided warehouses on the West Coast of South India. This is done only with dry processed Arabica and Robusta bean varieties. Exposing them to monsoon winds in this manner imparts them with the same characteristics that first enamored the Europeans centuries ago, and continue to make the Monsooned Malabar variety popular, especially when blended with stronger and more acidic coffee varieties.
Mysore Nuggets Extra Bold
The second specialty coffee variant of note from India is Mysore Nuggets. These coffees are produced from washed Arabica beans from plantations in Chikamagalur, Coorg, Biligiris, Shevaroys, and Bababudangiris. These beans are bluish-green in color, of large and uniform size, and have a very clean and polished appearance. The coffee from these beans has a very strong aroma, medium to the good body, and a fine flavor with nuances of spice.
Robusta Kaapi Royale
Robusta Kaapi Royale is prepared from Robusta Parchment AG that grows in Coorg, Wayanad, Chikmagalur, and Travancore. The beans have a grey to bluish-grey color and are pointed at the edges. The coffee from these beans is identified with a full-body coupled with a soft, smooth, and mellow flavor.
